What is MOTS-C (Mitochondrial-Derived Peptide)?
MOTS-C is coded by mitochondrial rather than nuclear DNA, which makes it unusual. The mechanism is genuinely interesting and the human evidence is very early.

Almost every protein in your body is coded by DNA in the cell nucleus. MOTS-C is coded by the small separate genome inside mitochondria, which is what makes it unusual. Where it comes from. Mitochondria carry their own small genome, separate from the DNA in the cell nucleus, and MOTS-C is coded there.
That was a genuinely surprising finding and it is why the compound attracted research interest. Peptides coded by mitochondrial DNA were not thought to exist in this form.
Is there human evidence?
Very little in terms of outcomes. The mechanism work is solid and there are observational human data linking MOTS-C levels to metabolic health.
What does not exist is a controlled trial showing that injecting it improves anything measurable in people. Almost all the functional results are from mice.
How does it compare to metformin?
They act on the same pathway, AMPK, which is why the comparison gets made. Metformin has decades of human data behind it and MOTS-C has almost none.
If AMPK activation is what you want and you have a medical reason for it, that is a conversation with a doctor rather than a peptide purchase.
Will it help my training?
The endurance results in mice are striking. Whether that translates to humans is not established and it would be dishonest to imply otherwise.
