What is PNC-27?
PNC-27 is an experimental anti-cancer peptide that selectively targets tumour cells, inducing rapid necrosis in them while leaving healthy untransformed cells intact.

PNC-27 combines a fragment of the p53 protein with a short sequence that carries it across cell membranes. p53 normally stops damaged cells dividing and is disabled in a large share of cancers, which is where the research interest comes from. In laboratory work the peptide binds a receptor that appears on the surface of cancer cells but not on normal ones, punching pores in the membrane and killing the cell directly rather than through the usual programmed cell death pathway. That distinction matters, because it is a route that does not depend on the machinery chemotherapy-resistant tumours have learned to switch off.
