What is B-12 (Astera Labs)?
Injectable B-12 in two forms. This is one of the few things on this shelf where injecting is the standard medical route rather than a preference.
Also sold as cobalamin, hydroxocobalamin or cyanocobalamin.
B-12 is needed to make red blood cells and to maintain the nervous system, and being short of it produces fatigue that no amount of training or caffeine fixes. Absorbing it orally depends on a stomach protein called intrinsic factor, which is why oral B-12 fails for a lot of people and why injections are the standard clinical answer. This one carries both hydroxocobalamin, the longer-lasting form, and cyanocobalamin.
B-12 benefits
- Injecting bypasses the absorption problem that limits oral B-12 for many people
- Two forms, one long-lasting and one fast-acting
- Supports red blood cell formation and nervous system function
- Genuine effect on fatigue for anyone actually deficient
- Vegetarians and vegans are far more likely to be low, since B-12 comes from animal foods
B-12 dosage
- Standard
- 1ml, 1 to 2 times per week
- Concentration
- 500mcg per ml
- Forms
- Hydroxocobalamin and cyanocobalamin
- Route
- Intramuscular for preference, to avoid skin irritation
- Total per vial

1ml once or twice a week. B-12 is water soluble and remarkably well tolerated, so there is no ceiling in the way there is with fat-soluble vitamins.
If you are vegetarian or vegan, you are considerably more likely to be low, since B-12 comes almost entirely from animal foods.

Who is B-12 for?
Anyone with unexplained fatigue worth ruling B-12 out for, vegetarians and vegans, and anyone whose bloodwork has already shown a low level.
It is the least expensive product on this shelf and the one with the clearest case for being injected rather than swallowed.
How to use B-12
Draw 1ml and inject subcutaneously or intramuscularly. Intramuscular is preferred, since these solutions can irritate under the skin. Rotate sites and wipe the stopper before every draw. The injection technique guide covers it.
Frequently asked questions
Why inject B-12 rather than take tablets?
Because absorbing B-12 orally depends on intrinsic factor, a protein made in the stomach, and a lot of people produce too little of it. That is why injections are the standard clinical treatment for deficiency.
Of everything on this shelf, this is the clearest case where injecting is genuinely better rather than simply faster.
What is the difference between the two forms?
Hydroxocobalamin lasts longer in the body and is the form used clinically in most of Europe. Cyanocobalamin is the more common synthetic form and acts faster.
Having both gives you a quicker onset and a longer tail from the same injection.
Will it give me more energy?
If you are low in B-12, noticeably, and the fatigue from deficiency is not something training or caffeine resolves.
If your level is normal, honestly no. Extra B-12 does not produce extra energy in someone who already has enough, and a blood test is a cheap way to find out which you are.
Can I take too much?
Practically, no. B-12 is water soluble and the surplus is passed in urine rather than stored, which is why clinical doses can be far higher than this.
It is one of the safest things in the catalogue.
How often should I inject it?
Once or twice a week is enough for most people. Clinical protocols for genuine deficiency sometimes start more frequently and then taper.
Because it is water soluble there is no accumulation to worry about.
