What is Bacteriostatic Water (Astera Labs)?
Astera Labs bacteriostatic water in a 10ml multidose vial, the diluent for lyophilised peptides and HGH.
Also sold as bac water, BAC water or bacteriostatic water for injection.
Bacteriostatic water is purified, sterilised water carrying 0.9% benzyl alcohol. The benzyl alcohol is the entire point: it stops bacterial growth, which is what allows the same container to be entered more than once. Plain sterile water has no preservative, so once it is opened it is single use and nothing more.
Bacteriostatic Water benefits
- The standard diluent for reconstituting lyophilised peptides and HGH
- 0.9% benzyl alcohol prevents bacterial growth, so the vial can be entered repeatedly
- Draw any amount you need rather than committing to a full millilitre
- One 10ml vial covers roughly ten peptide vials reconstituted at 1ml each
How much to use
- Typical per peptide vial
- 1 to 2ml
- Benzyl alcohol
- 0.9%
- Shelf life once entered
- 28 days, then discard
- Reconstituted peptide storage
- Refrigerated, 2 to 8°C
How much you add is a decision about convenience, not potency. A 5mg peptide vial holds 5mg whether you add 1ml or 3ml. What changes is the concentration and therefore how many units you draw for a given dose.
The peptide dosage calculator works this out for you.

Who is Bacteriostatic Water for?
Anyone using lyophilised peptides or HGH, which arrive as powder and cannot be injected until they are reconstituted.
This is the format that matches what bacteriostatic water is for. The preservative exists so a container can be entered more than once, and only a rubber stopper allows that. WATERMED ampoules cost the same and suit someone who reconstitutes a full millilitre at a time, but an opened ampoule cannot be resealed.
How to use Bacteriostatic Water
Angle the needle so the water runs down the inside wall of the peptide vial rather than jetting straight onto the powder. Then swirl gently, or leave it a few minutes to dissolve on its own. Do not shake. Peptides are fragile and force damages them. The peptide reconstitution guide covers the full method and the dosage calculator works out how much water to add for the dose you want.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between bacteriostatic and sterile water?
The 0.9% benzyl alcohol. Bacteriostatic water contains it, sterile water does not.
That single difference decides how you can use each one. Bacteriostatic water resists bacterial growth, so the same container can be drawn from repeatedly for up to 28 days. Sterile water has no preservative, so it is single use: once opened it is no longer sterile and anything left should be discarded.
How much do I add to a peptide vial?
That is your choice, and it sets your dosing rather than the strength of the peptide. Adding 1ml to a 5mg vial gives 5mg per ml; adding 2ml to the same vial gives 2.5mg per ml. The total peptide is identical either way.
More water means larger, easier to measure volumes for small doses. Less water means fewer units on the syringe. The peptide dosage calculator does the arithmetic for the dose you have in mind.
Can I shake the vial to dissolve it faster?
No. Shaking damages peptides. The physical force breaks the molecular structure and you lose potency doing it.
Run the water down the inside wall of the vial rather than onto the powder, then swirl gently or simply wait. Most peptides dissolve on their own within a few minutes.
Vial or ampoules for bac water?
The vial, in most cases. A rubber stopper is what lets you enter the container repeatedly, which is the entire reason bacteriostatic water contains a preservative at all.
Ampoules make sense if you always use a full millilitre in one go, since each one is sterile until snapped. But an opened ampoule cannot be resealed, so any water left in it is wasted.
How long does a reconstituted peptide last?
Generally 28 days refrigerated, which is the same limit the benzyl alcohol sets on the water itself. Some peptides are more stable than others and a few are considerably less.
Keep it at 2 to 8 degrees, protected from light, and do not freeze it once mixed. Freezing and thawing damages peptides the same way shaking does.
