What is WATERMED (Bacteriostatic Water)?

WATERMED is bacteriostatic water in sealed 1ml ampoules, the diluent that turns a vial of lyophilised peptide powder into something you can inject.

Also sold as bac water, BAC water or bacteriostatic water for injection.

Bacteriostatic water is purified, sterilised water carrying 0.9% benzyl alcohol. The benzyl alcohol is the entire point: it stops bacterial growth, which is what allows the same container to be entered more than once. Plain sterile water has no preservative, so once it is opened it is single use and nothing more.

WATERMED benefits

  • The standard diluent for reconstituting lyophilised peptides and HGH
  • 0.9% benzyl alcohol prevents bacterial growth in the reconstituted vial
  • Each ampoule is sealed and sterile until the moment you open it
  • 1ml is the most common amount added to a single peptide vial, so one ampoule is usually one job

How much to use

Typical per peptide vial
1 to 2ml
Benzyl alcohol

Shelf life once entered

How much you add is a decision about convenience, not potency. A 5mg peptide vial holds 5mg whether you add 1ml or 3ml. What changes is the concentration and therefore how many units you draw for a given dose.

The peptide dosage calculator works this out for you.

Who is WATERMED for?

Anyone using lyophilised peptides or HGH, which arrive as powder and cannot be injected until they are reconstituted. It is a consumable rather than a product with an effect of its own.

The ampoule format has one real catch worth knowing: an opened ampoule cannot be resealed, so despite being bacteriostatic water it is effectively single use. That is fine if you reconstitute with a full 1ml at a time. If you want to draw small amounts repeatedly over weeks, the 10ml vial is the format that actually uses the preservative you are paying for, at the same price.

Before you use it. Benzyl alcohol is what makes this multi-use and it is also its only limitation. It is safe at the volumes peptide work involves, a millilitre or two at a time, but it is not suitable for large-volume use, and it is specifically contraindicated in newborns. Once a container has been entered, discard it after 28 days regardless of how much is left. Store reconstituted peptides in the fridge, not the freezer.

How to use WATERMED

Angle the needle so the water runs down the inside wall of the peptide vial rather than jetting straight onto the powder. Then swirl gently, or leave it a few minutes to dissolve on its own. Do not shake. Peptides are fragile and force damages them. The peptide reconstitution guide covers the full method and the dosage calculator works out how much water to add for the dose you want.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between bacteriostatic and sterile water?

The 0.9% benzyl alcohol. Bacteriostatic water contains it, sterile water does not.

That single difference decides how you can use each one. Bacteriostatic water resists bacterial growth, so the same container can be drawn from repeatedly for up to 28 days. Sterile water has no preservative, so it is single use: once opened it is no longer sterile and anything left should be discarded.

How much do I add to a peptide vial?

That is your choice, and it sets your dosing rather than the strength of the peptide. Adding 1ml to a 5mg vial gives 5mg per ml; adding 2ml to the same vial gives 2.5mg per ml. The total peptide is identical either way.

More water means larger, easier to measure volumes for small doses. Less water means fewer units on the syringe. The peptide dosage calculator does the arithmetic for the dose you have in mind.

Can I shake the vial to dissolve it faster?

No. Shaking damages peptides. The physical force breaks the molecular structure and you lose potency doing it.

Run the water down the inside wall of the vial rather than onto the powder, then swirl gently or simply wait. Most peptides dissolve on their own within a few minutes.

Can I reuse an opened ampoule?

Not safely. An ampoule is snapped open and cannot be resealed, so once it is open it is exposed to air regardless of what is in it.

The benzyl alcohol resists bacterial growth in a sealed vial with a rubber stopper. It cannot do anything about an open glass container. If your workflow involves drawing small amounts over several weeks, the vial is the correct format.

How long does a reconstituted peptide last?

Generally 28 days refrigerated, which is the same limit the benzyl alcohol sets on the water itself. Some peptides are more stable than others and a few are considerably less.

Keep it at 2 to 8 degrees, protected from light, and do not freeze it once mixed. Freezing and thawing damages peptides the same way shaking does.
